NBA Basketball

Prince Is Familiar with Grizzlies' New Stage

TENNESSEE -- Tayshaun Prince's basketball journey is like that of most big time players—it's full of successes and achievements en route to the NBA.

For him, it all started at national powerhouse Dominguez High School. The Compton, CA native experienced the joy of winning a state championship there.

He was also named Mr. Basketball of the state of California in 1998.

He transitioned smoothly from there right to the winningest basketball program of all time and had a great

NBA Playoffs: Savvy Former Players Lead Teams in the New Western Conference

TENNESSEE -- It doesn't seem all that long ago that theDetroit PistonsandChicago Bullswere working their way up theNBAplayoffs food chain.

Both teams eventually spent time at the top and got to see theviewthe Lakers and Celtics had long enjoyed.

In reality, the '90s are getting farther and farther back in the rear view mirror all the time.

With each Flagrant 1 or 2 that gets handed out, a lot of folks over the age of 30 either think to themselves or wonder aloud that back in the '90s that was just a typical playoff foul.

"The Doctor" A New NBA TV Originals Documentary To Air During The NBA Finals

NEW YORK – As NBA fans prepare to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Philadelphia 76ers’ 1983 title, the team’s leader, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, will be the next subject in the award-winning NBA TV Originals franchise.

The Doctor, a 90-minute documentary will be airing between Games 2 and 3 of The Finals on Monday, June 10, at 9 p.m. ET.

Many basketball fans were introduced to Erving when he joined the NBA at age 26, and what they saw was some of the most amazing aerial artistry in the game.

"Super Scout" Marty Blake Passes Away At 86

NEW YORK -- Marty Blake, who worked in the NBA for more than 50 years and is regarded by many as the “Godfather of NBA Scouting,” passed away Sunday, in Alpharetta, Georgia.

He was 86. Blake’s virtuosity in unearthing basketball talent from far-flung locations was legendary, and spanned generations.

Long before words like “analytics” and “metrics” were part of the vocabulary of basketball talent evaluators, Blake was combing the country for basketball players and devising revolutionary ways to document and compare prospects.

This year, Noche Latina celebrations will begin on March 2 and take place in Los Angeles (Lakers), Miami (Heat), Orlando (Magic), Phoenix (Suns), San Antonio (Spurs), Chicago (Bulls), and New York (Knicks).

Three days of live game action will culminate with the 62nd NBA All-Star Game at Toyota Center on Sunday, Feb. 17.

adidas, NBA unveil 2013 All-Star Uniforms

PORTLAND – adidas, the official oncourt apparel provider for the National Basketball Association (NBA), have unveiled the uniforms and apparel for the 62 NBA All-Star Game on February 17, 2013 at the Toyota Center in Houston .

Designed by adidas, the uniforms take inspiration from Houston’s rich aeronautical history and the speed of the jet planes that dot its skies.

The uniforms’ eye-catching impact camo pattern evokes the world’s fastest fleet of aircraft with the classic silhouette of a basketball net.

Jackson State standout Hunter Named Interim Coach of the NBA's Suns

MISSISSIPPI -- The Phoenix Suns selected former Jackson State standout Lindsey Hunter to be the interim coach for the second half of the season.

After former four-year coach Alvin Gentry's departure Friday morning, Suns General Manager Lance Blanks led the decision on picking an internal replacement and chose Hunter over Suns veteran assistant coaches Elston Turner, Dan Majerle and Igor Kokoskov.

The former first round pick also played at Alcorn State during the 1988-89 season where he was named to the All-SWAC Freshmen Team.

What to Do with Drew

MILWAUKEE -- It must be hurting Drew Gooden on the inside to sit on the Milwaukee Bucks bench and see other teammates get in the game, even if the Bucks are blowing another team out.

But he just sits and rots like the skin of a banana that turns from green to black.   Gooden is perfectly healthy to contribute for the team.  Unfortunately, he’s on the wrong side of his career path right now.

It’s just sad to see something like that happen to a veteran player.

Last season when Andrew Bogut was injured and sat out a lot of games before he was eventually traded, Gooden stepped in to play center in a shortened NBA season.

David Stern To Step Down As NBA Commissioner On February 1, 2014

Stern also announced that the Board of Governors voted unanimously to accept his recommendation that Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver succeed him as Commissioner.

“Adam is a world-class business executive who has influenced so many areas of our business during his tenure with the NBA,” Stern said. “I am pleased that the Board has chosen him as my successor and I know the NBA will be in very good hands.

NEW YORK –Following a record-breaking year in 2011-12, the NBA will begin its 67 season on Oct. 30 with eight nationally televised games in four days on TNT, ESPN, and NBA TV as part of Kia NBA Tip-Off ’12.

(ABC: +6%, 5,421,000 vs. 5,110,000; TNT: +4%, 2,498,000 vs. 2,397,000; NBA TV: +31%, 337,000 vs.

Team Chemistry Still Missing for Bucks

MILWAUKEE -- If you’re looking for some improvement from the Milwaukee Bucks, don’t hold your breath.

It’s one thing to have talent on your team, but getting that talent to play together is another thing.

One look at how the team is performing through the preseason and you can see why it’s hard to think they will make the playoffs in 2013.

Since none of the Bucks’ preseason games are on TV, you had to see firsthand as I did last weekend why some basketball experts think the playoffs aren’t on the horizon.

Little Two Have Big Plans For The Bucks

MILWAUKEE -- Instead of the Big Three, the Milwaukee Bucks have the Little Two.

Both of these guys are working on changing the way the team plays, that is, if they have their way.

Guards Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis had a little brother, big brother talk recently.  They live in the same apartment building.

Ellis is about four years older than Jennings.   It was a time for both of them to lay out their plan to lead the Bucks back into the playoffs.

21 NBA teams represented on Olympic rosters

NEW YORK –A record 39 NBA players will be featured on national team rosters for the basketball tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games, up from 28 in 2008.

The games will also showcase a record 18 former NBA players on team rosters bringing the total number of current and former players competing to 57.

This year’s rosters also represent the most-ever national teams with NBA representation, with 11 of the 12 teams having at least one current NBA player.

Twenty-one NBA teams have players represented on national team rosters with the San Antonio Spurs topping the list with six.

Why We Should All Root for the Miami Heat to Beat the Oklahoma City Thunder

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- The 2012 NBA finals presents more than a match-up of two young, exciting, athletic teams.

They present a rooting litmus test.

In one corner, we have the Miami Heat, a team scorned for being built around a hastily assembled group of free-agent all-stars Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the great LeBron James.

No player in NBA history has been scrutinized, picked apart and even despised quite like James.

The three-time MVP’s unforgivable crime, now two years old, was neither a felony nor misdemeanor nor even a bad attitude.

Mutombo’s role in $10 million
gold scam only now coming to light

HOUSTON -- One-time NBA star Dikembe Mutombo has made a worldwide name for himself sponsoring humanitarian projects and noble causes in his native Africa, so it was only natural that two State Department officials would meet with him in November 2010 as part of his effort to bring more attention to the bloody trade in conflict minerals that has bedeviled his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Less than two weeks later, according to a U.N. report, Mutombo was in New York on a more personal cause — trying to interest a Houston oil executive in a $10 million deal to buy 1,045 pounds of gold from the mines of eastern Congo, the heart of the conflict mineral trade.
