Nets' Williams Wins Kia Community Assist Award For November

NEW YORK – Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams is the recipient of the Kia Community Assist Award for November in recognition of his outstanding efforts in the community and his ongoing philanthropic and charitable work, the NBA announced Tuesday.   

Kia and the NBA are honoring Williams in part for his charitable efforts through his Point of Hope Foundation (POH), which supports programs that provide resources, research grants and a number of in-house initiatives that help children and families in need.

11-Year Old Designs Black Dolls

FLORIDA -- Bubbly, creative and kind-hearted, accurately describes 11-year old Myah J. Davie of Orlando, Florida. 

Myah loves to draw and design clothing as a hobby so when her parents' college friends, Sheri and Corey Crawley started Pretty Brown Girl, LLC, 

Myah was eager to help.The company's flagship product, "Laila" the Pretty Brown Girl doll, was prompted from the couple watching the reenactment of the 1940's Doll Test that aired on CNN 360 with Anderson Cooper.

NEW YORK -- My husband and I fuss and fret over our black boy.

Like other parents, we worry about a lot. We want him to use his smarts for good.

Do we coddle him too much?

We want him to be tough and kind, but assertive and gentle, and not mean.

His boundaries of independent exploration are radiating outward, concentric circles growing farther and farther from us.

We wring our hands and pretend to look away in acknowledgment that he's ready to claim his freedom, even as we cast furtive glances his way.

Seahawks confirm tryout for Brian Banks

RENTON, Wash. -- Brian Banks will get a crack at the NFL, even if it's simply a tryout.

The Seattle Seahawks confirmed Wednesday they will hold a tryout for Banks, a former high school football star who was exonerated last week in a California rape case in which he was falsely accused.

Seattle coach Pete Carroll did not speak following the Seahawks' offseason workout on Wednesday, but the team confirmed that Banks will work out for the team on June 7.

"This is what I have dreamed about my entire life,'' Banks said in a statement from the California Western School of Law, home of the California Innocence Project.

New Social Network For Africans Worldwide

CALIFORNIA -- Africland is a social network that is meant for Africans, both in the continent and Diaspora.

This site offers a rare opportunity for people with African ancestry to link up, learn and networking with one another all over the globe. 

Launched on April 7th, the site has seen an exponential growth of members who have had positive feedback. Founder and administrator, Lorenzo Were, candidly talks about the site and his objective. 

According to Lorenzo, he came up with this idea after realize how out of touch African descendants were with each other, the misconceptions, misunderstandings and almost a near case of suspicion from one another.

Book: "Why Black Women Gain More Weight"

NEW YORK (BP) --The statistics are widely published.

The National Center for Health Statistics reports that more than one half (54.3 percent) of Americans are obese, with black women comprising the most overweight segment of the U.S. population, followed by Hispanic women.

The statistics indicate that 78 percent of us are overweight - that's nearly four out of five black women - and 54 percent of us are obese.

African-American women are suffering from obesity at an alarmingly disproportionate rate compared to women of other races.

NEW YORK -- Over the years, Jamie Dukes, a former NFL offensive lineman, has watched friends, former teammates and colleagues -- most of them black men and all of them overweight -- die from heart attacks, diabetes and other maladies related to their weight.

There have been seven teammates who he can name off the top of his head. All died before the age of 45.

The list begins with Reggie White,the Hall of Fame defensive end who died the day after Christmas in 2004of cardiac arrhythmia and sleep apnea.

Minority swimming company finds huge success

NEW YORK -- swim swim swim I SAY is the only female and minority owned swimming company in the Harlem/Upper Manhattan NYC area that is teaching a "Fear of Water To Loving the Water" (TM) swimming curriculum.

Prep star hits game-winning shot for perfect season, falls and dies

Tragedy struck Western Michigan on Thursday whenFennville (Mich.) High basketball star Wes Leonard hit a game-winning shot in a 57-55, overtime victory over Bridgman (Mich.) High, then collapsed on the courtwhile celebrating the victory and was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly thereafter.
According to the Associated Press, Leonard, who you can see making the game-winning shot above,was celebrating his game-winning layup with the rest of his teammates when he collapsed to the ground

James' foundation spreading 'Decision' wealth

MIAMI -- The side door to the newly refurbished gym opened, a blast of sunlight splashed into the darkened corner, and 100 children began shrieking in unison.

LeBron James was thrilled.
